All Saints Church in Toledo...

All Saints Church in Toledo, Ohio, has published for years an extra mile club in its newsletter, naming people who the previous month performed various acts of kindness, help, service and "body-building" in and around the congregation. Generally it was the pastor and secretary who saw these deeds and included them, but anyone could add names to the list, and in general it simply has been a way to thank and celebrate people; most say they do what they do without a need to be "in the club," but it is for the celebration of the whole congregation that the list is made. While the most easily nominated members of the extra mile club are those who perform some tasks around the church office or building, what would happen if the list included those who had held their tongue when they were wronged at the traffic intersection, or secretly shovelled the snow of the cantankerous neighbor's driveway, or who gave up better hours at the job so that another could work and still be home with her children? -- Lintern
