All three readings today --but...

All three readings today --but especially the first reading in Joel --suggest that there are appropriate days for public confession of sins and repentance. So it is fitting that on this Ash Wednesday we have our "fast and call an assembly." (Verse 15)
But in the Christian faith we also affirm that every day is a time when we can be fully forgiven by a waiting Father. Last Spring the Chicago Library System staged its so-called "Forgiveness Week," as many libraries across the country have done. No matter how long a book was overdue, it could be returned during "Forgiveness Week" with no questions asked and no fines due. The South Chicago branch library received one book that had been checked out on November 1, 1903. It was eighty-two years overdue!
Believers in Christ need not carry around the baggage of their sins that long. Ash Wednesday --and every day --is a time when God's forgiveness is waiting for you and me!
