Almost everyone has a favorite teacher, a person whose love for his or her students was
evident in how they taught and in the lives he or she touched.
One teacher who has captured the imagination of millions, is Anna Leonowens, a woman whose story is told in the movie, The King and I. For five years, Anna served as a teacher to the children of King Mongkut's children in Bangkok. Anna's influence as a teacher is portrayed as far ranging, reaching out from the classroom into the very throne room of the king. Anna taught all she knew about reading and writing, about romance, about etiquette, and even about politics. The King and I gives the impression that Anna's teaching was the catalyst in moving Siam toward modernization.
Historians have debunked much of what we know and love of The King and I. Whether the story is true or cut from the whole cloth of fabrication, the role of teacher is lifted up, and in a small measure, demonstrates the role of the Advocate, whose gentle teaching of the things of Jesus touches every aspect of our life.
