Although the internet is the repository of the transitory, a surprisingly successful function
of the internet is in finding a possible mate. Statistically, marriages that began through the
internet have proven to be relatively stable. Why this result from what seems to be an
artificial means of communicating? One theory says it's because people must spend time
writing and reading, putting their thoughts and needs onto the computer screen and
reading how another person responds. Often in courting, people are carried away by
emotions and don't get around to talking and listening about their deepest values,
commitments, and faith.
Paul, the apostle, takes the time and makes the effort to write to his friends in Thessalonica. He has sorted through life's daily events and centers upon essential matters. He writes of his thoughts and feelings toward them. He's filled with joy and thankfulness because of their faith, and so in his longing to be with them he prays for them. Even at a distance, his readers surely grasp Paul's total dedication to God and his constant concern for them. Paul's letter communicates such an enduring message that it sealed his relationship with its recipients. They made sure that such a love letter was saved, copied, and passed on to us.
