Americans live in a culture...

Americans live in a culture of sports heroes. The football and basketball superstars are big, tough, and powerful. It is really difficult to imagine that they could have any weaknesses. When we take the veil away and closely examine their lives, we see human beings who have problems in life. Many of these mighty athletes look to God as a central force in their lives. Their God is no bigger than our God. Paul and his followers did not "lose heart," because they were confident that God had mercy on their work. Paul is the voice of the church and many of his followers' beliefs will be shaped by his strength of character and personality. He wants the Corinth followers to be fearless, courageous, and forceful in their evangelism. Paul knew this was not the time to be cowardly. The same awesome God walks with us today. God has mercy on our work, too.
