Among the most tragic incidents of World War II were the collaborations between occupied peoples and their Nazi oppressors. France was divided. Many French sided with the Germans in what is called Vichy France. In occupied Norway, Quisling collaborated with the Nazi invaders. Why? Was it because these people expected the German forces to remain victorious and the war to end with them in power? They had made pacts with death. Vichy France eventually fell to the invading Allies. Quisling's name has become a part of our vocabulary as a traitor and collaborator. We can only be assured of life when we identify ourselves with the purposes of God. Martin Luther King, Jr. used to say that the arc of the universe is long, but it leans toward justice.
