Amos' countrymen faced imminent disaster...

Amos' countrymen faced imminent disaster because of their disobedience. Few of his
contemporaries were guiltless. They grievously erred. How? They neglected the poor,
they dealt dishonestly, and they forgot God.
Our neighbors and we may face tsunamis of punishment in our time, too, for our guilt. Some fault government and big business. In fact it's fashionable to blame "crooked politicians" and "greedy corporations" for society's ills.
But all avarice isn't corporate and all the wickedness isn't in Washington. Small towns, farms, and parsonages house their shares of ungodliness. I refer to selfish and dishonest Christians, and bitter pew sitters. I really worry about those of us who worship comfortably in preacher's shrines, and race home to watch NFL games on plasma televisions while folks go hungry and never hear the good news of Jesus. "They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it." When that happens, will the word of God and the change it requires be found in you?
