Anthony de Mello, the Jesuit retreat leader and writer, once told a story about keeping awake: The Master said, "Enlightenment is awareness."
The student asked, "What can I do then to become aware?"
"Nothing. No more than you can do to make the sun rise."
"Then why pray or fast?" the student asked.
The Master replied, "To make sure you are awake when the sun rises."
