The Apocalypse of John asserts that all of human behavior must now be measured in the light of the One who has conquered death and will return. Humanity does well then to heed the message of angelic heralds to be awake. That same note is sounded by others from a different point of view. In 1982 Jonathan Schell published The Fate Of The Earth, a book that resulted from a series of three articles he wrote for the New Yorker. Schell sounded the alarm that human civilization was threatened with total devastation by a nuclear holocaust. The end of the cold war has made people somewhat indifferent to the possibility of annihilation by a nuclear war. Yet the fact remains that America and Russia remain custodians of nuclear arsenals. The end of civilization by a nuclear confrontation remains a distinct possibility. Meanwhile we live with the use of herbicides and chemicals that greatly disturb the environmentalists. At the same time we are alerted regularly to the presence of radioactivity that not only endangers the fruits of the creation but the very marrow of our bones. An environmentalist like Jonathan Weiner bemoans in his book The Next Hundred Years that there is no life policy for the planet earth. The angelical call for a spiritual awakening is all the more urgent. -- Huxhold
