Asking Grandfather to pass the butter was an invitation to have your thumb imbedded knuckle-deep in the stick of butter. And then a good-natured giggle worthy of Ed Wynn would come bubbling out of his mouth. Such healthy teasing and joking around were integral parts of Grandfather's personality. Joining his healthy sense of humor was an undying love for his Lord, his church and his family.

My father came into the family and quickly adopted many of his father's personality traits. Even though he chose a different career path and married into a different denomination of the Christian faith, he continued to live a lifestyle quite similar to that of his father. He, too, was known to always have a funny story just waiting to burst forth from his lips. Although he is not rich financially, his is a life filled with a wealth of faith and family issues. Now retired, he still plugs into his church in whatever ways he can -- committee work, special projects, Sunday school. Known for his mechanical skills as well as his people skills, he treats neighbors and friends like members of his extended family by repairing their cars and appliances, happy that he can help.

After reading today's text, I hope I can be a good imitator of my father, just as he imitates my grandfather.
