The first bishop I remember seeing was Edwin Hughes. I was just a small boy, attending an Annual Conference over which he was presiding. I can still picture in my mind the smallness of his physical stature, the impressiveness of his white hair, and his power as a preacher.
Bishop Hughes told of taking a walk with a little child one evening during the troubled, hectic days of the First World War. All of a sudden the child stopped, its attention captured by a brilliant evening star. The child was silent for a long time, and then said, "Did you know, Mr. Hughes, God must have had a son in this war; there's a service star in his window."
"Arise, shine; for your light has come." We are not in the battle alone. God has a Son who is "in the service" with us.
