The text is overlaid with foreshadowings of Gospel themes to come: World missions: these first visitors from beyond Judea are attracted to the Christ-child and thereby foreshadow the reach of the gospel to all the world. Educational ministries: Herod asks the learned scribes about the records pointing to the Messiah's birth. Worship: the wise men knelt and worshiped the Christ-child and brought offerings to him. Two kingdoms: an ominous note of a jealous kingly power anxious to be rid of any royal usurper: The worldly kingdom and its claims are juxtaposed with God's kingdom and his claims. A spirited benediction: the wisemen were warned with a good news directive for the sake of life, to leave and return to their country in disobedience to Herod's command. Each of these themes weaves its way into the fabric of the New Testament tapestry.
