In the Australian film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, a different way is revealed through the life of the central figure portrayed by David Bowie. The movie is set during World War II in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Lawrence is a prisoner who cultivates a friendship with the camp commandant. In one especially poignant scene Lawrence intervenes in the execution of one of the other officers by placing himself between the commandant and the prisoner. The Japanese officer can only execute the prisoner by first using his sword on Lawrence. Unable to do so because of his love for this man, the commander loses face and Lawrence is punished. His punishment involves being buried from the neck down and exposed to the tropical sun. During the night after the prisoners have returned from a hard day of forced labor, they serenade their exiled friend with a hymn reminding him of worship as a boy back home. The kingdom of love is revealed in a world gone mad with hatred through Lawrence's suffering on behalf of others, just as Christ's kingdom is revealed through his disciples' suffering.
