The author of Hebrews asserts that Jesus is "the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being...." Early church leaders, drawing from Greek philosophical concepts, overlaid this affirmation with Trinitarian doctrines. Even if it were stripped of these theological reflections, it would remain the foundation of our faith. As a Yale professor said to the missionary E. Stanley Jones, "The question to my mind is not as to the divinity of Jesus but as to whether God will act like Jesus." A little girl woke up, frightened by a nightmare, and crawled into bed with her parents. "You know, dear," her mother said, "that God is always near you, even when you are scared." "Yes," replied the child, "but right now I need someone with skin on." In a profound sense, those who knew Jesus best regarded him as the nature and character of God with skin on. -- Bristow
