The authors of the old...

The authors of the "old hymns" took at face value the declarations of the Apostle Paul to the Romans. "We were buried with Christ in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead, so we too may live a new life." They wrote the hymns, expressing this confidence.
My wife and I make weekly visits to an Alzheimer's unit. We enjoy greeting the people, going to the organ and playing familiar hymns. A few of the residents come to the organ and sing. They sing every line of the old hymns. We listen with a quiet tear, thinking of these dear souls who no longer communicate with the sense they once did. Here they are singing with the same faith and hope they have sung with through the years. How wonderful to hear them sing those expressions of assurance of living in Christ now and eternally!
