Back in the 1920s an evangelist told the story of a widow and her three children who had nothing at all to eat. So the poor woman came to a little neighborhood grocery store and asked for some food. "How much money do you have?" the grocer asked. "I have nothing but a little prayer," the woman answered. Not a very religious man, the storekeeper replied sarcastically, "Write the prayer on a piece of paper, and I'll weigh it on the scale. You may have free in groceries whatever that prayer weighs." He was surprised when the woman handed him a slip of paper; but because other customers were watching and had heard his remarks, he put it on the weight side of the old-fashioned scale. Then he began to pile goods on the other side; but to his amazement, the scale would not go down. Angry and frustrated, he finally said, "That's all the scale will hold. Take it and be gone!" With tears in her eyes, the woman expressed her thanks and left. Later on, when the store was empty of customers, the grocer examined the scale and discovered that it was broken and would not move no matter how much weight was placed on it. Was that just an accident? The grocer never saw the woman again, but that incident changed his life. Until the end he treasured that slip of paper on which the poor widow had written the simple words: "Please, Lord, give us this day our daily bread."
"The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness to me." A little prayer slip can weigh more than all the burdens of the world.
