Back in 1960, Dr. Maxwell Maltz wrote what was to become a best-seller, and still a very popular work, Psycho-Cybernetics. From his experience as a plastic surgeon he had learned, that although he could often improve the self-image of people by altering some feature about which they felt self-conscious, there were many others for whom no corresponding change occurred when they had undergone surgery. Such persons felt ugly before they went into surgery to have a problem corrected, and when the procedure had healed and the bandages came off, they still felt ugly. Their appearance had not changed in their own eyes.
Dr. Maltz concluded that what was really needed for such persons was not just physical surgery, but mental and emotional surgery, that excised the bad image the person was carrying about within. Outward changes become evident to people as that inward image was altered.
It's interesting to note how unselfconscious Moses was when he came down off the mountain. The Bible says that he didn't realize that his face revealed the radiance of God with whom he had sojourned. Yet, all the people saw it. They recognized a change in Moses' appearance that radiated from within. It was a deep change that altered his personality. It's at this level that God desires to change all our lives.
