A backpacking guide in the Colorado Rockies gives the advice, during his orientation, that if any person in the group gets lost they are to "hug a tree." The tree wouldn't move, so the lost backpacker would stay put. Help would soon come. If the backpacker kept searching for the group he or she would usually get farther and farther from the rest of the group, making the search more difficult. We, too, would do well to “hug a tree.”
