Bela came to this country...
Illustration
Bela came to this country from Eastern Europe in the harsh days following the Second World War, when the Iron Curtain was descending to cut off east from west. Last year, even as the Berlin wall was falling, she lay dying in a hospital bed. As I set out to visit her I was very aware that she had never returned home since that day she escaped with only the clothes on her back. Now her life was ending in a strange land even as new freedom was coming to her own nation. I felt pity for her. She must have sensed it in my voice and my words, for she said, "Don't feel sorry for me. No, it doesn't matter that I never went home. My hope for my people has sustained me and been my life. I have held home in my heart all these years, and it is enough. I die happy knowing that my land is free again. I am going home."
