Benjamin Disraeli was a fascinating man! This Victorian statesman served as Prime Minister of his country, wrote novels, and was renowned for his oratory in the House of Commons. Disraeli was without question one of the greatest diplomats in history, ranking with such giants as Talleyrand and our own Dr. Henry Kissinger. Yet even Disraeli failed in diplomacy when Queen Victoria visited him at his country mansion, Beaconsfield. The tiny widow had spent long hours lamenting the death of her husband Albert. The lugubrious Victoria's mournful recitation of her grief undoubtedly had gotten on Disraeli's nerves. It is reported that while on his deathbed Disraeli refused to see the Queen, who had come to bid him farewell. Disraeli told those hovering over him, "I do not want to see the Queen, as she will only ask me to take a message to Albert!" We, as well as Paul, have been called to be ambassadors for Christ. We are to share the good news, letting the chips fall where they may. We may fail in our diplomacy among friends and neighbors, but we can point others to the King of Creation who understands, forgives, and forges us into the people of God. -- Mills
