Beth's brother Brandon, and Patrick...

Beth's brother Brandon, and Patrick, the boy from next door, might as well have been speaking Martian as far as Beth was concerned. The two of them were in the kitchen practicing their French and she couldn't understand one word of it. A French foreign exchange student would be arriving next week to live with Patrick's family. Her name was Monique, and even though they had never seen so much as a single picture of her, both boys were certain she would be gorgeous and had taken a renewed interest in their sophomore French classes since hearing of her impending arrival. Monique would be a junior, in Patrick's sister's class. Beth had heard Brandon and Patrick talking about how irresistible they would be to Monique when she learned they were able to speak her native tongue. "Ha!" Beth had thought to herself, "it will take more than that!" She found herself wondering what schoolboy French would sound like to Monique. Would she find it amusing? Would their pronunciation be so bad Monique couldn't even understand them? Of course, Monique had to know some English to even be selected for the exchange student program. "Still," Beth thought, "it must take a very brave person to go live in a land which used another language." -- Fannin
