The bishop was visiting his old friend, a pastor of a quiet little country church. Since the pastor was continually referring to his pleasant location as God's country, the bishop inquired what he would do if one day he looked out the window and actually saw God walking toward his door. After a moment's thought, the pastor replied: "I would look very busy."
Perhaps Martha felt the same way and, when the Lord entered her home, she demonstrated what it means to be a woman on the move.
Mary was also very busy, but in a different way. She was busy listening to the wisdom of the teacher. Her active listening no doubt encouraged Jesus to talk and brought him much more peace of mind than the activity of Martha.
We deeply appreciate people who are good listeners. They enable us to unburden our anxious minds by allowing us to talk, and show they care about us as persons and are interested in our views.
We might prohibit the Lord from revealing his thoughts and inspirations to us because we are not disciplined enough to busy ourselves in the difficult task of active listening.
