The Book of Revelation is an example of apocalyptic writing. An important thing to remember about this kind of literature is that numbers are used as codes. They are to be interpreted as meaning certain things. Seven stands for completion and perfection. Three-
and-a-half is the number for partial completion. Six is the number of incompletion and imperfection. Seven stands for God. 666 stands for one who embodies all the imperfections of humanity. One thousand is the largest number in the Hebrew numerology and means basically the same thing as when we say, "one gezillion." In other words, the number 1,000 stands for a quality beyond human comprehension. Twelve is one of those code numbers. Twelve stands for the people of God. By pointing to all the sets of 12 John sees in his vision of the New Jerusalem, John is telling us that the New Jerusalem is composed of the saints of God. In the age to come, God will dwell among the gathered saints. They will need no temple, because they themselves will be the temple in which God dwells. -- Welborn
