Botanists have identified tens of thousands of different kinds of seeds. Some are as large as the double coconut that can weigh 50 pounds, and others are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Towering redwoods grow from seeds one tenth of an inch long. Jesus made note of the large bush that grows from the very small mustard seed. Many seeds are very perishable. If they do not land in ripe conditions, they can die in moments. Others can lie for years until the right conditions prevail. Seed found in the Egyptian pyramids has been grown after several thousand years. Still, even the hardiest of seed will eventually die and return to dust. Peter reminds us that even the best seed of this world, as bountiful and hardy as it might be, has its limits. It might survive for centuries, it might bear a thousandfold or more. But like the grass of the field it will wither. The seed of our faith is of different substance that is imperishable and grows new life.
