Brad was adopted when he was five years old. He never knew his father, but he had known and loved his mother. One evening while he and his mother were driving home from work, she lost control of the car and it rolled over. The accident occurred before the days when seatbelts were commonly used and both Brad and his mother were thrown from the car. Brad miraculously landed safely; his mother wasn't as fortunate. She died from the impact.
Brad's mother was an only child of two elderly immigrants, one of whom was dead, and the other too old to care for a young child. Brad was put up for adoption. At first, Brad was sullen. He resented living with strangers, refused to interact with his adoptive family, and generally had a very hard time adjusting.
Brad's adoptive parents continued to love Brad, encouraging him to open up, yet giving him space. About a year after his adoption, a sort of "miracle" took place in Brad's life. Brad's parents bought a new horse, Star, and brought it home to the farm. While Brad's older sisters all took turns riding the horse around the pen, Brad refused to ride. Several weeks later, Brad and his mother were down at the pen. Brad turned to her and without even thinking about what he was saying, he asked, "Mommy, can I ride Star now?" It was the first time Brad had ever referred to his adoptive mother as "Mommy."
Brad's adoptive parents later recalled that it was then that they knew how God felt when one of his children finally called out, "Abba, Father."
