In browsing through one of the back shelves of a used bookstore I came across a very old volume with a curious title: The Christian Case ForSiavery. In the middle of the last century this book was written and distributed in the American South as a serious treaties. In what today would be considered absurd, the author argued that the Bible advocates one group of human beings possessing another group of human beings.
By God's grace we grew beyond that. We no longer even feel compelled to take seriously those who want to use the Scripture to justify slavery or racial superiority. That which "was not made known to the sons of men in other generations" (v. 5) is now abundantly clear.
By the continuing work of the Holy Spirit, perhaps that time shall come when we will no longer listen to those who seek to justify war, racism, poverty, and all manner of other exploitation.
