Carroll fled his native Poland...

Carroll fled his native Poland after the Second World War. He hated Communism and the oppression it represented. But as others worried about the spread and eventual world domination of Marxism, Carroll was convinced it would never happen. "It is an evil system. It does terrible things to the human spirit," he would rail, "and God will not permit it to rule."
Carroll died in the early 1970s when the "domino theory" of Communist takeover was firmly believed by most Americans. He, however, never relented in his conviction that Communism was doomed to failure. He never got to see what he believed to be true: the domino theory can better be applied to spread of freedom than Communism.
On this particular matter, Carroll had faith. As William Barclay puts it, faith "is the hope which looks forward with utter conviction (Daily Bible Study, Hebrews, p. 128)."
