Charles Dickens, in his Tale of Two Cities, has Sydney Carton visit a prisoner on death now named Charles Dannay. Canton decided to exchange clothes with the convicted criminal and Dannay walked out of the prison as a free man. Canton's loving act cost him his life, but Dannay received a new life.
