As a child I was taught to ask the following questions: who, what, where, when, why, and how. I was to ask these questions in order to understand others, to identify locations, to come to terms with time, to grasp meaning in a situation, and to solve problems. Ultimately, these questions were to be asked so that I could understand what was happening around me. As a seminary student, my Homiletics professor reminded me to ask these same questions as I studied the Scriptures for the purpose of writing a sermon. I was assured that these questions would help me to understand Scripture in such a way that I could help others grow in faith toward God, and in love toward themselves and others. Since then, I have discovered that there are times when these questions are not enough to help me understand Scripture in such a way that I can talk about it to others. It is at those times that I have started to ask myself another question, "Whose needs are being met?" For example, whose needs are being met as Jesus is baptized and the heavens open so that the Holy Spirit can descend on Jesus as a dove and God's voice can be heard proclaiming that Jesus is the beloved Son?
