Children enjoy Halloween masks. It is fun to pretend to be somebody else and have others guess who you are. I must confess that, although most of the children who come "trick or treating" to our house are neighbors, I don't recognize half of them in their masks.
Parents often dislike Halloween masks --not because they do not want their children to have fun, but because they are concerned for their children's safety. The same mask that conceals a child's identity often obscures the child's vision. I've seen the "trick or treaters" stumble on our steps, or miss dropping candy into their bags because the mask did not fit well enough to allow them to see. Parents worry that a masked child may not be able to see well enough to cross a street safely.
Veils are like masks; they conceal our identity, but also keep us from seeing others clearly. We cannot hide ourselves from others without hiding them from our view. In each case, we lose something. In the transfiguration, the masks come off, the veils are lifted, and we behold the glory of God.
