Christian pastors and laypeople are sometimes invited to offer a prayer of invocation at public gatherings. These events may be service club luncheons, football games, or dedications of public buildings or sites. In every instance, the one who is asked to offer the prayer is invited to do so because of a commitment to or an association with a church or Christian fellowship group. The irony in many invitations which are extended today is that the person or group who does the inviting sometimes suggests -- in the hope of not offending someone -- that references such as "in the name of Jesus Christ" ought to be eliminated. If Christians offer only generic, "inoffensive" prayers devoid of the name of the one through whom we pray, how are foreigners to the faith to know and fear God through the example of our prayer life? There is in circulation the tongue-in-cheek prayer which is intended to offend no one, and that prayer has but five words: Whoever, Whatever, So be it! God's word and witness demand more than that.
