Christians live in an odd tension, with the promise of life "in the Spirit" counterbalanced with the reality of life "in the flesh." Living with the latter reality is a difficult prison to escape.
As long as we consent to live "in the flesh," we become a law unto ourselves, and the guidance of the Spirit gets shelved. An acquaintance was having a conversation with Giovanni Giolitti, the Italian statesman who served time and again as prime minister in governments that kept coming quickly to an end. The friend asked, "Is it difficult to govern Italy?" Giolitti replied, "Not at all. But it's useless."
