At Christmas, people grab from this text: "Prince of peace," and "endless peace," and miss "boots of the tramping warriors ... garments rolled in blood." Peace doesn't appear when people say, "Isn't that nice?" It comes when realistic people work their hearts out for it.
Jeanette Rankin (1880-1973) worked for peace. She was the first woman elected to the US House of Representatives (Montana, 1916) before women in the rest of the US could vote (1920). She voted against US entry into WWI (one of 50 votes against) and later was the only vote against war with Japan in WWII (later she voted "present" in votes for war against Germany and Italy).
She not only resisted war but as a representative and later as a lobbyist promoted women's and children's health issues. To the end of her life she worked for peace, bequeathing money for scholarships for low income women.
