Church members know how challenging it can be to live up to Paul's admonition, "let there be no disagreements among you." It's nearly impossible when the divisions are historic and deep yet, people find ways to bury the hatchet. Stephen A. Douglas, who defeated Abra-ham Lincoln in a U.S. Senate race in Illinois, later ran against the railsplitter a second time -- for the presidency -- and lost. On inauguration day, standing by the newly elected president, Douglas noticed Lincoln couldn't find anywhere to put down his hat while he lifted one hand for the oath of office and lay the other on a Bible. Douglas volunteered to hold it. Afterward he said to one of Mrs. Lincoln's cousins, "If I can't be president, I can at least hold his hat."
