A cleric once bewailed the fact that his people preferred the back pews in the sanctuary, leaving several forward pews almost always vacant. These empty pews, almost literally under his nose, were -- he indicated -- most disheartening.
The following Sunday, much to his surprise and much to the surprise of many others in the congregation, these front pews were no longer unoccupied. Fifteen or so older members of the congregation moved from pews they had long occupied and migrated to these front ones. A testimony, certainly, to the flexibility of older adults, but also a reminder of the power of the spoken word.
How much greater than the power of God's speech to motivate, challenge, and change! Or, to look at it a bit differently, how powerful God's speaking when our speaking becomes its vessel! Of his word, God says through the prophet, "... it shall not return to me empty...."
