The condemnation of Jerusalem is shown in the violent words of the prophet Zephaniah. The chilling report sounds like the urban situation of many major cities throughout the world today.
A television science fiction film recently depicted the insidious violence of a typical American city late in the 20th century. Two men each find a pair of sunglasses. When they don them, they see what they could not see without the glasses.
It is evident that by wearing the glasses, they can view deeply-rooted, evil totalitarian presence in the population. Ordinary billboards and newsprint in bold type, Obey! Do not speak! Submit to all authority willingly! Those who are part of the evil regime are seen as cruelly grimacing skeletal individuals.
When it becomes apparent to the evil elements that outsiders know of their presence and are unwilling to agree with it, pressure mounts to have them destroyed. Only by banding together with others do the two innocent individuals have an opportunity to defeat the violence of the societal environment around them.
Do we see with the lens of the prophet?
But the ending has not arrived yet for God's people. Says Pascal, "Christ will be in agony to the end of the world." The tears which flowed from the prophets for Jerusalem continue to flow for those who seek to destroy the innocent of the world.
