David H. C. Read, until recently senior minister of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, declared as follows in one of his sermons: "I have recently read several of the best-selling novels of our day and the effect they had on me was to make me want to shout, 'Is this all that human life adds up to? Is there nothing more than squabbling and neuroses and depression and spending money and fornicating and taking drugs?' We know the power of the dark forces that threaten human life. We know the anguish and the boredom that affects mankind. But do we not know also another force at work among men and women? Is there not a divine energy to be found that makes for love and joy and peace -- and all the other words the cynics have deflated and abandoned?
"Do we not hear that in this text from Paul? The Spirit of God is not just a vague presence that illumines the world, but an energizing power that works within us -- in the inner being (v. 16) -- to overcome evil and create in us the life of Christ himself."
-- Macleod
