David was a great military leader, and by and large, a great king. Yet his fatal flaw seems to have been with regard to his family life, starting with the incident with Bathsheba. He seems to have been soft and weak-willed when it came to his family, and perhaps it is because of this that he had little loyalty from his sons, including Absalom, whose death is described here, along with David's grief. His grief is such that it threatens his functioning as king. Joab is not about to let that happen. Perhaps these stories of David's family life may give us all pause to reflect -- "Try to learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make them all yourself" (Anonymous).
