In December 1999, my sister and I were talking about Mom's eightieth birthday. Mom has Alzheimer's disease and we wondered if we should have a family party. Finally we decided it didn't matter if Mom did not remember having a party the next day. She would enjoy the party as it happened, and we would have the pleasure of knowing that we had celebrated her birthday. Since Mom's birthday is close to Christmas, we have traditionally sung Christmas carols as part of her celebrations. For this birthday we decided that we would also celebrate Holy Communion together as a family. The day was a success. Mom's brother and sister and their families came. We saw cousins that we hadn't seen for many years. Mom's grandchildren played the carols as we sang, and God's Spirit moved among us as we shared Holy Communion. My sister went to see Mom the very next day. As expected, Mom had forgotten about the party -- or more truthfully -- Mom had forgotten about most of the party. The memory of sharing the Lord's Supper stayed with her for five days.
