Dennis Waitley in Seeds of Greatness speaks about the need to have goals in one's personal life. He tells the surprising fact that only 5 out of 10 professionals are able to live after retirement without the benefits of Social Security. This is the case, even though these individuals have been in the highest income bracket. How does he account for this? He explains, "They squander their money, their time, and their minds with activities that are 'tension relieving,' instead of 'goal achieving.'"*
Unfortunately, many Christians follow the same pattern in their spiritual lives. They are most eager for God to offer them a sense of peace that eases their anxiety and worry, but they don't seek with equal vigor a vision that will enable them to accomplish the great purposes of God. These are the goals that give people a sense of meaning and heighten their self-esteem when they accomplish God-given tasks.
Paul waited patiently to discover God's vision for his ministry, and when he received it, he was promptly obedient. He went to Macedonia, and a new phase of his ministry was begun.
