The distinguished Scottish preacher, Arthur J. Gossip, wrote in one of his sermons:
"Contemporary fiction is a terrible picture of life without religion, of boredom and a kind of despair driving unsatisfied hearts into all manner of extravagances, feverishly seeking something that will fill up their days and help them to forget, and keep them from thinking."
Over against this dismally negative picture, Paul in 1 Thessalonians 2:12 challenges his readers to "lead a life worthy of God." Then, to be specific, he spells out his advice in a catalogue of ethical and spiritual admonitions (vv. 16-24). "I can't do it!" is our common protest. But he assures those of that early Christian community that their faithfulness in their intent and venture will be met by the faithfulness of God who can make them spiritually adequate and will stand by them.
