Do not quench the Spirit...

"Do not quench the Spirit."
The little girl came home from church school all enthused after listening to a visiting missionary. "Mother, I want to be a missionary when I grow up." "That's nice," replied her mother, "but you will make more money as a computer programmer." "Do not quench the Spirit." When the Nobel prize winning research physicist Arthur Holly Compton was eight years old he proudly handed his mother an essay he had written saying, "Here is what I think of this elephant question. I have gone through a lot of books. They all say that African elephants have three toes and Indian elephants have five toes. I believe this is wrong. I say African elephants have five toes and Indian elephants have three toes and this essay tells you why I think so." Instead of deflating this pronouncement, Mrs. Compton said, "Good for you, Arthur. Congratulations on making such a thorough study of the matter." Years later when she asked him if he remembered this conversation he replied, "Yes, Mother, and if you had laughed at me then it would have finished my urge for research."
