Do you remember what happened...

Do you remember what happened just prior to the Melbourne Olympics? The Australian track and field championships were being held. The great miler, John Landy, who had already beaten Roger Bannister's record several times, promised to run a truly fast mile. Good as his word, Landy was churning along when the runner in front of him, a promising nineteen-year-old named Ron Clarke, stumbled and fell. John Landy sailed over him, raking Ron's arms with his spikes. Nothing in the rule books dictated what John did next. He stopped, turned around, went back to help Clarke. Then, when Ron protested that he was okay, John got back into the race, passed the entire field, and charged into the tape to win in 4:04.2. Roger Bannister's coach, Franz Stampfl, an eyewitness to the scene, said, "That's the most gallant action I have seen in a lifetime." (by Richard W. Graves in the Christian Union Herald)
