Dr. Jim Withers, 38, is one of about two dozen doctors, nurses, and ex-derelicts who serve in Operation Safety Net, a medical care group who visit and treat the homeless and derelicts on the streets of Pittsburgh. At least once a week you will see him checking blood pressure, examining feet and throats and sores, and administering medications to people who otherwise would have no health care at all. To make his point to young doctors recently, he brought a street person in who had a gangrenous leg, and proceeded to soap, shower, and dress him in clean clothes to show that underneath the grime there was a real person in need of compassion. Dr. Withers exemplifies the heart which Jesus wants all Christians to have. Rather than be like the Pharisees of his day, who lorded it over others, Jesus calls all Christians to humble themselves for service to others.
