During grief counseling and funerals...

During grief counseling and funerals, the life of the faithful departed is lifted up and celebrated. During those times, it becomes obvious where and how this child of God shared God's love with others, how her light shined. Perhaps her sense of humor helped the family make it through difficult times. Or maybe her openness to friends -- and even strangers -- was a special way that she shared her joyful spirit in the community. The family may remember her creativity and inventiveness and tell stories about the gadgets she made to solve particular problems she encountered. Co-workers may have experienced her sense of justice in making difficult staffing decisions. Neighbors may tell about her ability to be at the right place at the right time with a helping hand. Some remarks may conclude with a statement of thanks to God for having known and shared the gift of life with this special woman. It is good to listen to those who have witnessed the power of God's light shining through a Christian brother or sister. In the listening, we are reminded of the reality of God's light in our lives and the importance of allowing that light to shine forth at home, in our communities, and in our schools and workplaces. -- Spencer
