During my young adult years I had the opportunity to live in a "collective house" in Washington, D.C. We operated on the principle that "five of us supported six of us," which meant that one person was freed up to work full time for social justice. That person was a buddy of mine from Alaska who had come to live with us. After surveying the community, he decided to work for the establishment of an alternative food store. The result was a place called "fields of plenty," a bi-lingual food store that sold nutritious food at low cost.
The arrangement turned out to be a noble experiment. We lasted together for a year before each of us moved on to a different challenge. I have never had the privilege of living with "five supporting six" since then. But I am grateful for the opportunity I had to live, ever so briefly, in a communal lifestyle.
