As each day passes, people that we thought never would be interested in God are coming to faith. For example, the communist system in the former Soviet Union adopted Karl Marx's idea that all religion is just a kind of opium for the people. But today, more and more former communists are coming to Jesus, realizing that he has something more to offer them than Marx or Lenin or Stalin ever could. In 1992, Eduard Shevardnadze, the former Soviet foreign minister, was baptized and became a Christian. And more recently, Pavel Grachev, the Russian defense minister, who was a longtime member of the Communist Party and who commanded the Soviet troops in Afghanistan for five years, was baptized by the Orthodox Church in Russia. God's Word takes root and flourishes in places that we do not expect. -- Bowen
