Elizabeth Kubler-Ross created a great sensation through her interviews with dying patients which she published in On Death and Dying. She made an important contribution to ministry in the hospitals through her observations about death and dying. However, since then she has gone overboard with her desire to prove something about the life beyond. One has to question whether all critically ill patients have the same experiences. More seriously, even if all had the same experiences in dying that would not speak to the question about the life hereafter.
People deal with the questions of life after death in other ways that may be superficial. Soap operas, TV dramas, movies, and novels are loaded with death stories that may never suggest any concern for the question of eternal life. Parents may explain the death of pets to the children in ways that may be very warm and comforting but not theological. Public fascination with violence suggests the awareness of the mystery of death but no more than that unless it appeals to some latent brutality. The nuclear arms race betrays the global contradiction that we believe we must threaten humanity with annihilation if we are going to save it. In the midst of a world that is locked in the grip of death, we calmly assert the Easter faith that holds its vision of life eternal in the face of death's worst threats.
