Elizabeth would give birth to John the Baptist and Mary to Jesus. Their meeting while
being pregnant informs us not only about those two babies, but about every baby. Jesus
served his heavenly Father by caring for other people. He illustrated God's coming realm
by caring for the sick and lonely, the outcasts and foreigners. He blessed babies and
presented them as illustrations of our neediness before God. At Jesus' time, as high as
fifty percent of children would die by age six; and, children were undervalued, in fact
considered on the same level with slaves.
Jesus taught that in the last judgment people would be judged by whether they cared for the poor and needy, because by doing so they either attended to Jesus or rejected him. Jesus demonstrated by what he did and what he taught that every person is infinitely valuable to God -- even children. On this Christmas Eve, we truly understand Jesus' birth if we greet each baby born into this world as we would greet the baby Jesus.
