Emil Brunner, a theologian of an earlier day, wrote a book titled, The Mediator. In it the author expanded on the role of Christ as the mediator or High Priest who is our source of salvation.
Why does modern man, surrounded as he is with the fruits of his scientific endeavors, need a great High Priest? The answer will fill volumes, but we seek a mediator because we are the created, not the Creator. We are not only dependent beings, but also we have misused our freedom and have rebelled against the Holy God who created us and the universe. Our rebellion is called sin, and it digs a pit for us that is insurmountable without divine help.
